Extraordinary spaces
Gardens & Estate
Avondale Wine Estate’s gardens reflect the deep-rooted passion of the women in the Grieve family, passed down through generations. Their love for gardening and dedication to creating beautiful, sustainable spaces has shaped the estate’s unique garden experiences. From Ginny’s secluded sanctuary to Suzanne, Ruth, and Julie’s private gardens, each space is a testament to their creativity and devotion to nature.
This family legacy is evident in every garden, with the estate’s commitment to organic and biodynamic principles enhancing the landscape. Each year, the family proudly shares this passion by opening their private gardens to the public, offering a glimpse into the heart of Avondale’s connection to nature and its preservation for future generations.
A family passion
Gardens
Avondale Wine Estate is home to stunning natural and cultivated beauty, offering more than just vineyards and winemaking. The estate boasts seven spectacular organic garden experiences: the Cellar Gardens and waterways, the private gardens of Ginny, Suzanne, Ruth, and Julie, the Rose Garden, and the working vegetable garden that supplies FABER Restaurant. The historic werf area is framed by Cape Dutch buildings dating back to 1813, while the estate’s cattle graze the fields, serving as natural lawnmowers.
Avondale is deeply committed to conservation, from the fynbos and indigenous plants in the “wildflower garden” to the wildlife that roams freely across the Klein Drakensberg Mountain. These organically maintained gardens offer guests a peaceful retreat, blending indigenous plants, beautiful vistas, and serene spaces for picnics or leisurely walks.
Every year, we celebrate our passion for nature by opening these seven private gardens to the public, inviting visitors to share in our love for this tranquil and biodiverse landscape.
