We are really proud that three Avondale wines so far, have featured in Robert Parker’s top ratings at www.eRobertParker.com. The American wine writer was the founder of the famous The Wine Advocate, a long-standing independent consumer guide to the world’s finest wines. Our wines were tasted by his reviewer Neal Martin, who scored them all between 90 and 95 – which on Parker’s scale means “An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines”.
When we submitted the wines we didn’t necessarily expect such high ratings, as our wines are more European in style, rather than U.S.A.
2009 Avondale Anima (Chenin Blanc) was rated 90
Review: …“Sourced from 8- to 30-year old vines, whole-bunch pressed and raised in 1st, 2nd and 3rd fill 500-liter French oak barrels, it has a lovely, understated bouquet with lime flower, nectarine and a touch of walnut that is very well defined and blossoms in the glass. The palate is taut and refined with crisp acidity, fresh citrus fruit, apricot, gooseberry and a hint of mango that leads to a nicely focused finish. Drink now-2016.” …
2009 Avondale Cyclus (Viognier blend) was rated 91
Review: …“ The 2009 Cyclus is a blend of 60% Viognier with the remainder consisting of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Semillon. Sixty percent of the crop was fermented in 500-liter French oak barrels. It harnesses the aromatic spice of Viognier on the nose: nectarine, dried apricots, wax resin and a hint of lemon curd. The palate is well balanced with a pleasing fatness on the entry. There is a honeyed quality to this Chenin, a little richer and more generous than the Anima, but a vibrant finish of honey, grilled almond, lemongrass and a twist of lemon. This is a stylish, multi-faceted Chenin Blanc. Drink now-2016+.”…
2006 Avondale Samsara (Syrah) was rated 90
Review: …“ The 2006 Samsara Syrah is a little “funky” at first, but calms down with aeration to reveal a mellow, blackberry and cassis-scented bouquet that is just a little warm and alcoholic. The palate is full-bodied and luscious, with succulent dark berries, cherry liqueur and a touch of Provencal herbs. The finish is rounded and seductive. Drink now-2017.”
